Keshav Maharaj has proved himself to be a team player, filling the much-needed spin void in the South Africa setup while also becoming a part of the team’s think tank.
South Africa’s spinner Keshav Maharaj is eager to face Australia in the forthcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 Final at the Oval, commencing on June 11, as reported by the ICC website.
Maharaj has established himself as a valuable team player, addressing the critical spin deficiency in the South African squad while also becoming an integral part of the team’s strategic discussions.
“I suppose I have become someone who offers support to those in need. I enjoy providing advice whenever possible,” Maharaj stated, as quoted by the ICC.
The 35-year-old is making his return to competitive cricket after an extended hiatus and is enthusiastic about challenging Pat Cummins’ team in the Ultimate Test. Maharaj has taken 22 wickets against Australia in this format, with an average of 45 in conditions that are not particularly favorable for spinners.
Maharaj has significantly contributed to South Africa’s path to the final, having claimed 40 wickets across eight matches in this World Test Championship cycle. Despite his break, Maharaj’s determination to overcome the Australians remains steadfast.
“After the break, I am thrilled to reunite with the team. The players have been competing in various tournaments, but now we have the opportunity to bond and concentrate,” he added.

“I have been diligently working on my bowling and fitness, and I believe we required a mental respite. However, there is no need for extra motivation when playing a final against Australia.”
Australia is the only team to have secured victory in all senior Men’s ICC events across formats, boasting a total of 10 titles.
We are aware of the challenge ahead, as Australia is an exceptional team that showcases an impressive style of cricket. They have maintained their status as a dominant force for an extended period and have triumphed in all three formats.
Nevertheless, Keshav Maharaj is confident that this South African team, which has achieved victory in its last seven Tests consecutively, possesses the capability to halt the Australian momentum.
“When I reflect on the spirit of this team, our unwavering determination is particularly notable. Although only three of us have participated in over 50 Tests, we consistently confront challenges head-on. No matter the venue or the adversary, we have faith in one another, and that is what truly counts.”
Keshav Maharaj further emphasized South Africa’s remarkable performance at the Lord’s Cricket Ground, where they have secured five Test victories since their return to international cricket in 1991.
