According to a report from Deadline, the cancellation is attributed to declining viewership. The third season premiered on the streaming platform on April 17 and fell out of Nielsen’s Top 10 Originals chart within the first three weeks of its release.
The report also noted that Nielsen rankings only account for U.S. viewership, while decisions regarding streaming renewals take into consideration a show’s performance on a global scale. The Wheel of Time is recognized as a global title and achieved the #1 ranking on Prime Video in multiple countries during its latest season. Nevertheless, sources indicate that despite exploring various alternatives and engaging in discussions with the lead studio, Sony TV, the overall performance of Season 3 did not warrant its substantial production costs, leading Prime Video to ultimately decide against renewing the series for another season.
